Don't gain weigth in the first place?? What kind of statement is that? Women bare children each and every day. Also, I have had cancer and the treatments with all the steroids caused me to gain a ton of weight, and also pushed me into menopause at only 35 years old. Here I am 38, and over 100 pounds overweight. I am in the process of getting approved to have the Lap Band procedure. I have tried every diet out there, and lose a little weight, only to gain twice as much back. I actually bought the book NRL for Women hoping to get some insight in how to lose excess skin while I am losing weight from the Lap Band, hoping the tool is a successful tool for me. Any suggestions? Or should I punish myself now that I "already gained the weight"???

I think genetics has a great deal in your weight. But it's also a choice. I'm definitely genetically overweight but i try to eat healthy and i exercise a lot. I just built a home gym with a treadmill, elliptical and lots of weights because i know it will be a life time challenge to stay thin.

I have always been amused at the cycles we go through here in America. Eggs are good for you. No, eggs are bad for you. No, eggs are good for you, but only the whites. It goes to show that the so-called experts don't have all the answers.

I have also seen the ridiculous trend of appetite suppressants. I don't always eat (poorly or otherwise) because I am hungry. Most times it is because I am bored and/or undisciplined.

I started weight training seriously about 2.5 years ago. Last year I got NROL for Abs, which revolutionized my workouts. Combined with calorie supervision it helped me to lose about 45 pounds. I've gained some of it back because of undisciplined eating, but looking at my 215 pounds now versus the other times I was at that weight, you would see a much different body. I am much more muscular now. I have gained lots of strength (squatting 285 and going for 305 tomorrow). I know that I need to just tweak a few things in my diet and nutrition to get back down to 200. I do wish that I could tell what my caloric output would be (at rest and working out) without having to invest in expensive (for me) equipment like a BodyBugg.

Great post. Even if genetics is a factor, you can still do something about it. Eat less!

I really like this article Lou. Whilst choice and diet are the ultimate deciding factor in a person's weight there is definitely an argument for genetic determination. But I am still a strong believer in a wholesome, healthy diet and regular exercise - a simple but effective mantra to follow!
