Monday Math

A handful of fun and interesting stories to check out this morning:

TV + exercise = weight loss.

A schizophrenia drug + a blood-pressure drug = an ejaculation-preventing contraceptive pill for men.

Slow reaction times + poorly functioning memory = heart attacks.

Making more money may or may not = more happiness. (And check out this New York Times story on how the really rich are separating themselves from the merely successful and affluent. Is anyone happier because he's making millions instead of hundreds of thousands?)

The Unknown Country

I know this doesn't have anything to do with the obesity epidemic, but how weird is this story?

California's attorney general moved to shut down a private school promising high-school diplomas to immigrants.

In a nutshell:

"The California Alternative High School in Los Angeles targeted Hispanic immigrants, charging $450 to $1,450 for a 10-week course it said would lead to a valid diploma and help them get into college, find better jobs and get financial aid, California Attorney General Bill Lockyer said last week.

"But the school's certificate isn't recognized as a high school diploma, Lockyer said, and school officials ignored a previous court order that banned them from telling consumers it was.

"Lockyer said the curriculum consisted of a slim workbook riddled with errors, including:

"The United States has 53 states but the 'flag has not yet been updated to reflect the addition of the last three states' -- Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico.

"World War II began in 1938 and ended in 1942.

"There are two houses of Congress -- the Senate and the House, and 'one is for Democrats and the other is for the Republicans, respectively.'"

Everyone knows that both houses of Congress are for Republicans.

Kevin Drum has the best comment I've seen:

"This is not the kind of thing that anyone would just mistakenly get wrong, which means there's some kind of intellectual sadism involved here too. After all, what's the point of not just defrauding students, but deliberately teaching them myths when it's no harder to just teach them the truth? The human mind is a real cesspool at times, isn't it?"
